This film is called "Hanina" or Homesick in Nubian. Nubia is a region of Egypt that was submerged underwater when the Aswan High Dam was completed on the Nile in 1965. Over 100,000 Nubians were displaced and forced to move to resettlement homes north of the dam in a desert environment. Although a devastating story, it's also a story of resilience, and I am so proud to have been able to work on this project. It reinforces relationships to land, grief when land is lost, how we use rivers, and prompts questions about the future as landscapes continue to change with climate change and continued industrial expansion.
